I am putting this right here since I need to post something to get this ball rolling again. You see, it has been thirteen days, three started drafts, and endlessly frustrated self-talk since I last shared something online.
My last post was supposed to be a big huzzah, the grand opening, the cutting of a ribbon to get me up and running, but clearly that did not do it for me. It is going to take much more than vague deadlines and excuses to get this daily writing done. It is going to take I think of Glen Hansard in “Paying My Way” when he sings:
Well, you can’t just get what you want
Without a little work a day
And you can’t just stick out your hand
No, it doesn’t work that wayIt’s gonna be a long one
I’ll be working all night long
It’s gonna be a long one
But I’m paying my way
This is not the first, nor will it be the last, time that I slip up on projects that are supposed to be my priority. I just went through this with another friend/business partner of mine for whom I am writing haiku. I didn’t deliver what I promised and, to be honest, it just made me look bad.
This helped me recognize an all too familiar cycle: I set goals, forget them, remember they exist, then start again. The thing is, nothing really gets done in that time span. So whether I want to call it lack of discipline or blame it on my perfectionism, I just need to get back to work.
Here is Glen singing it to us live:
