Sometimes, all you have to do to make a place feel more like home is hang up a frame or two. A couple of weeks ago, I was fed up with how lifeless my bedroom felt, so finally took my hammer and nails and hung up some frames. And, let me tell you, it feels so much livlier!

I know a lot of renters like myself are intimidated to make holes in the wall—let alone paint—but ever since I lived on my own in Boston, I took the risk and decorated.

Back then I was struggling with disassociation, the feeling of being disconnected and absent from my life. In order to help myself feel a bit more grounded, I decided to invest in some paint (I asked my landlord) and decorated the room as I wanted. Because I lived in a shared apartment, my bedroom was the only place for me to express myself. I went dark and moody on the walls, possibly a reflection of how I was feeling. The paint made me love my room. It was small, and it was cramped, but it was mine.
