After an 11-mile walk with my parents and our dog Penny, we all came home, ate breakfast, and took a long nap. I didn’t get up until later on in the afternoon when my parents had already left with Penny to join a friend for dinner. I got ready and hit the town.

I first stopped by at Tejuinos Jalisco which, if you’re in the Inland Empire, I strongly recommend that you visit. Their raspados are the closest thing I have to authentic Mexican shaved ice, which makes my heart (and tum) very happy. The owners emanated such peace that I took a seat and enjoyed my raspado while chatting with them to learn more about their small business. I stayed until closing and left for the store.

I had a few things to return at T.J.Maxx and took a stroll to see if I could find a cake stand. I didn’t find one there, but I found a beautiful pie pan, souffle dishes (which I’ve been curious to get), and the exact 6-inch cake pans that I currently use. I even found a copy of Samin Nosrat’s Salt, Fat, Acid, Heat. Later, at another store, I found The New Yorker Cartoon Caption game which I didn’t know existed. I felt like I hit the shopping jackpot.

But all this shopping left me feeling a bit uneasy only because I’ve been thinking a lot about sustainability lately. When I think about it, my consumerism doesn’t really help the fact that I’m just piling things upon this earth that will take ages to decompose. I don’t know how to feel about all of this, and I’m wrestling with it currently. I know, I got real serious real quick.

Before I got home, I stopped by for my chicken dinner at the Bdubs that Amin and I normally go to. It was a good day, and it gave me some good things to think about.
